While the specifics of the cumulative Summer Games medal count can be subject to debate due to regularly shifting global political landscapes, one thing is certain: The United States has dominated.

The top of the list also includes five other countries that have won at least 500 total medals. While the Soviet Union is a distant second, the Soviets amassed their total in just nine appearances between 1952 and 1988.

France and Great Britain have participated in all previous 27 Summer Games, the U.S. and Italy in 26, and Germany in 23.
